![]() We Europeans are an animal friendly bunch and if someone suggested that we keep our furry friends outside in the garden and not inside the house as part of the family, we would be sure to tell them absolutely not! Unfortunately here in Turkey there are different views on how animals should be homed. Some restaurants / bars take a puppy in to attract customers during the summer season, and then when winter comes they leave the very same dog out on the street to fend for itself. Fair? I think not… What happens to these dogs after being turfed out onto the streets is not always known, however some of the ‘lucky’ ones are rounded up and taken to the dog shelter here in Marmaris. The pound itself is run by the local council and is currently home to 230 plus dogs with the total always higher towards the end of the season. The government policy is TNR - Trap, Neuter, and Return. There are 3 workers employed to feed and clean the dogs, plus a council vet who neuters them. Unfortunately the vet has no time to treat sick animals at the pound. Welcome the volunteers – a group of 18 multinational ladies that go to the pound on a daily basis to do what the workers and vet simply can’t. They work tirelessly to treat the sick dogs, take the worse cases to private vets, supplement the food allowance, help with adoption and fostering, improve and maintain the living conditions, plus fund-raise on behalf of the furry group that they have grown to love. The pound relies heavily on donations to continue their work, and the volunteers would be very grateful if you could help either by volunteering or by donating as every lira makes a difference in their ongoing campaign. The group are always very happy to welcome new volunteers as there is always so much that needs doing. During the winter the pound holds various fund raising events and you can keep an eye of where and when they are on by joining the facebook group ‘Marmaris Animal Welfare’. Let’s support these amazing people in their amazing plight as much as we possibly can and give as much time and/or money as we can to give our furry friends the best care that they can get. Volunteers: Suna Ak, Yasemin Akkaya, Pamela Donaldson, Jane Ecer, Lesley Emery, Wendy Erleten, Pauline Hall, Tricia Holman, Nilgun Inceoglu, Helen Kingman, Chris Mazlum, Pat Mearns, Fleur Muntjewerf, Rachel Navaro, Georgina Reynolds, Iris Velu, Eva Wiater.
