![]() If we are using a fruit to describe a body shape, then Apple would be mine! Unfortunately no amount of exercise can get rid altogether of what you are born with, and a pot belly (sadly) runs right through my family tree. Beer & bread addictions do not help either; what does help is when you know what clothing styles to look out for when undertaking some retail therapy. As us Apple shaped gals tend to have other amazing assets that we can showcase like a good bust, small derrière and amazing pins; we can certainly camouflage that apple with just a few key items: The Wrap Dress/Top: This draws attention away from the stomach with its excellent fit over the bust and usual side tie at the tummy. Every apple gal should own a wrap dress and top of some description! The A-Line Skirt: A fuller skirt will do wonders at making the waist line appear smaller. Why not opt for Uber Fashionable monochrome or swinging sixties to style up this piece. Tailored Jackets: Use structured tailored jackets to cast an illusion of a trimmer middle. A one or two buttoned jacket is the best in this case. After all, trickery is an excellent tool to work with! The Kimono Blouse: With a plunging neck line to show off your fabulous bust combined with an animal print, will flatter the most stubborn of apple tums! The Jeans: Boot cut is the only way to go when it comes to jeans for the apple shaped gal. With the higher waist line and bum hugging attributes, the cut will have you turning from apple to apple core in the bat of an eye!

![]() We Europeans are an animal friendly bunch and if someone suggested that we keep our furry friends outside in the garden and not inside the house as part of the family, we would be sure to tell them absolutely not! Unfortunately here in Turkey there are different views on how animals should be homed. Some restaurants / bars take a puppy in to attract customers during the summer season, and then when winter comes they leave the very same dog out on the street to fend for itself. Fair? I think not… What happens to these dogs after being turfed out onto the streets is not always known, however some of the ‘lucky’ ones are rounded up and taken to the dog shelter here in Marmaris. The pound itself is run by the local council and is currently home to 230 plus dogs with the total always higher towards the end of the season. The government policy is TNR - Trap, Neuter, and Return. There are 3 workers employed to feed and clean the dogs, plus a council vet who neuters them. Unfortunately the vet has no time to treat sick animals at the pound. Welcome the volunteers – a group of 18 multinational ladies that go to the pound on a daily basis to do what the workers and vet simply can’t. They work tirelessly to treat the sick dogs, take the worse cases to private vets, supplement the food allowance, help with adoption and fostering, improve and maintain the living conditions, plus fund-raise on behalf of the furry group that they have grown to love. The pound relies heavily on donations to continue their work, and the volunteers would be very grateful if you could help either by volunteering or by donating as every lira makes a difference in their ongoing campaign. The group are always very happy to welcome new volunteers as there is always so much that needs doing. During the winter the pound holds various fund raising events and you can keep an eye of where and when they are on by joining the facebook group ‘Marmaris Animal Welfare’. Let’s support these amazing people in their amazing plight as much as we possibly can and give as much time and/or money as we can to give our furry friends the best care that they can get. Volunteers: Suna Ak, Yasemin Akkaya, Pamela Donaldson, Jane Ecer, Lesley Emery, Wendy Erleten, Pauline Hall, Tricia Holman, Nilgun Inceoglu, Helen Kingman, Chris Mazlum, Pat Mearns, Fleur Muntjewerf, Rachel Navaro, Georgina Reynolds, Iris Velu, Eva Wiater. ![]() · Beer & Bowling: This combines 2 of my very favorite things to do! I love a beer and having one whilst bowling is just fun in the making! You can do this at the sports centre in the marina (MSC Gym), and if you don’t want to call it a night after you have finished bowling, pop across the canal to have one for the road in Lighthouse! · Camping: Yes you heard me right - Camping in the winter can be really good fun as long as you check the weather a head of time! You can go as close or as far as you like. There are some lovely spots near Datça and Turunç that accept campers all year round. Look out for me at ‘Aktur’ near Datça as I plan on making that my second home this winter! And with tents really cheaply available online – why not pack up with a few beers and head off on an adventure! · Volunteer at the Marmaris / Içmeler Dog Pound: Free to do and priceless to the dogs! Be sure to check out the MAW page on Facebook for further info. · Cinema: There is usually one film in English on every couple of weeks in the Point Center/ Marti cinema, and at 10tl per person for entrance, this makes a cheap afternoon or evening leaving a few extra lira to spend on pick ‘n’ mix! · Horse Riding: Based in Camli village which is on the way to Cleopatra island, ‘Pinar Horse Safari’ is open all winter and only 15 minutes drive away from Marmaris. · Coffee with Friends: One of my pastimes during winter is to meet up with friends for a posh coffee and cookie at the trendy Kahve Dünyası. I can easily spend 2 hours catching up and having a gossip while working my way through the coffee menu chilling on the Netsel Marina. · Fishing: Winter is the time to relax and unwind and there is no better way to chill out than by fishing alone or with friends and a picnic. · Go-Carting: Located on the Datça road heading out towards Orhaniye, this is a great way to spend a few hours! It costs approx 20tl for 20 laps however I am sure that a deal can be made if there are a few of you heading out there! · Sunday Brunch at Asparan: Breakfast / Brunch Turkish Stylee come’s in at 15TL per person, and boy is it worth it! I am an Asparan regular during both winters and summers, but there is something slightly more special about heading down to there on a warm winters day for a spot of Sunday Brunch with friends. · Visit Izmir: Izmir Wildlife Park (Zoo) - 2tl per person for entrance. Ikea: A visit to Izmir would not be complete without hitting Ikea! |
