On 8th March 2014, Koyceğiz opened its doors to a new and improved Dog shelter, boasting a massive 18 Acres of land for the dogs to roam around and be well looked after by the staff and volunteers that tend tirelessly to their needs.
An excellent turn out came to the opening ceremony of the new shelter including hundreds of foreign nationals, Koycegiz Mayor Salih Erbay, Mugla Deputy Dr. Nurettin Demir, Beyobası Mayor Besim Uzbek and Mugla foreigners association president Khalil Karanfiloğl plus the Koycegiz Animal Welfare Group (Sarah Browne, Babs Hughes, Evelyn Girod, Linda Browne, Karen Milburn, Norman Bickerdike, Peter Gray). Sarah Browne, Unpaid Volunteer had the following to say: ‘We here at the new Koyceğiz shelter would like to Say a BIG THANK YOU to Everybody that came along and showed there support, it means a lot to us (and the dogs off course). We would also like to say a BIG THANK YOU to all our volunteers (active and those behind the scenes so to speak) for all the hard work put in as a group to get where we are today. We started the group back in Feb 2013 and now thanks to all the volunteers old and new, we had pestered the Baskan relentlessly and he finally gave in and gave us this new Koycegiz Animal Welfare Rehabilitation Shelter. We now have an amazing 18 acres of land given to the Animals by the municipality of Koycegiz. This has been named a natural rehabilitation centre for stray animals. People can come here and visit the dogs and there is also a picnic area to relax in and enjoy the natural beauty of this place.’ President Halil Karanfiloğl from the Association of Mugla Foreigners, gave the following speech: '' Koycegiz had a significant lack of this type of facility; the foreign volunteers of Koycegiz animal shelter had a very small shelter previously which was inadequate and not a healthy environment. Now we have a large natural area for the animals given by Mayor Erbaylar to Koycegiz animal welfare group.'' On behalf of those with no voices, we would like to wish you a huge well done and congratulations on the new shelter. Without the constant requests of the unpaid volunteers (amongst most), this shelter would not have got off the ground. We salute those that fight on behalf of the animals to make their lives a little easier, and to see their wagging tails is thanks enough indeed.
